What is the difference?
Dental crowns
A crown covers and reshapes a prepared tooth. It may be considered when a tooth is significantly weakened, cracked, heavily restored, or otherwise needs more coverage than a filling can provide. The tooth, root, gums, and bite must be assessed before a crown is recommended.
Dental bridges
A conventional bridge replaces one or more missing teeth with an artificial tooth supported by crowns on neighboring teeth. Other bridge designs and other ways to replace teeth may also be considered. Supporting teeth, gum health, bite, the missing-tooth space, and cleaning access all matter.
Planning restorative care
The dentist assesses the teeth, gums, bite, and relevant health history.

Preparation, appointments, temporary care, and follow-up are explained.
A damaged tooth may first need other treatment, or it may not be restorable. A missing tooth can sometimes be managed with a bridge, removable appliance, implant-based option, or no replacement, depending on the clinical situation and patient priorities.
Caring for crowns and bridges
Brush thoroughly with fluoride toothpaste and clean around restoration margins every day. A bridge also needs cleaning beneath the replacement tooth, using a method recommended by the dental team. Regular reviews help check the restoration, supporting teeth, gums, and bite.
- Avoid using teeth to open packages or bite very hard objects.
- Ask about protection if you grind or clench your teeth.
- Contact the clinic for looseness, fracture, persistent pain, swelling, or a bite change.
- Keep supporting teeth healthy because their condition affects the restoration.
Restorations can wear, chip, loosen, or develop problems at their edges. Good daily cleaning and professional review remain important.
Crowns and bridges questions
Is a crown better than a filling?
They serve different situations. The amount and location of damage, remaining tooth structure, bite, and other findings guide the recommendation.
Do bridges come out at night?
A fixed dental bridge is cemented in place and is not removed for daily cleaning. Removable partial dentures are a different type of tooth replacement.
How long will treatment take?
Timing varies with the tooth’s condition, the restoration planned, laboratory steps, and whether preparatory care is needed.
